Week 9: Movement animation

This week we had to animate a movement from a reference we picked. As a character we used a pre-made rig.

My first attempt:

This animation was lacking a bit of details. For example, the end of the foot that goes up was not moving, which made the animation movement seem less real.

As my second attempt I tried to pay attention to more details:

For my final animation I smoothed a bit of the end pose as well as removed first two frames on the hand movement, because it was unnecessary.

Week 9: Finishing lip-synching

For this week I have finalised the lip-synch head animation based of the reference. Even though I have done a lot of work, such animation could never be perfect and there is a lot of room for me to grow.

Week 9: Report Structure

This week’s class was about the report structure. For a clear and systematic structure should be evident, we can follow this example:

  • Title / Subtitle – a main topic
  • Acknowledgements – Optional
  • Abstract – a short summary of the dissertation
  • Key Words
  • Contents Page
  • Introduction – what the research is about, explain the context in which we are working, state the research question, and outline the ways the writing will answer them
  • Literature Review – to present the sources that have being used in the research to the readers
  • Chapters for main discussion – the key issues and strands that have consequence or relevance to the research enquiry
  • Conclusion – should sum up the findings of the research, and clearly explain an overall position
  • Bibliography
  • Image List

Week 8: Body Movement

For this week we had to find a reference and plan an animation of a movement.

My reference:

I also sketched the most complicated parts to see where the main key points will be:

Week 8: Lip-synching

This week we worked on adding blendshape edits to a character and making their lips move according to a reference.

The main issue with the selected reference was that the character in the film was not expressing a lot of obvious emotions. Instead, every detail was moving only slightly and had a big impact overall. For example, even the eyelids were almost not moving, expect a moment, when we closed them but still not completely. I tried to show that in my animation as well.

Week 8: Writing approaches

The main topic of this week was an overview of the principles of writing introductions and conclusions.

There are a few main components for a successful academic writing:

  • A clear understanding of the research topic undertaken and why
  • What information, data, learning informed the research and findings
  • A conclusion restating objective and connecting findings

As for introductions, the key points are:

  • Attracting the Reader’s Attention
  • Stating the Focused Topic – What is your paper about? Why is this topic important?
  • Including the thesis statement
  • Orientate the reader – The introduction should define the topic research informing the reader of the purpose and motivation of the research.

A conclusion works to remind the reader of the main points of the paper and summarizes the outcomes.

Week 7: Polishing a walking ball

For this week we had to finalise a walking ball animation. A walking cycle had to look smooth and without a proper character.

After the feedback I payed more attention the the weight shifting when stepping from one foot to another.

For the final animation I added background and lights:

Week 7: Blend Shapes

After customising a face with the help of the shape editor, we created certain mouth shapes imitating different sounds.

With these mouth shapes and other parts of the facial expressions, we made our characters imitate a monologue scene. For my reference I chose a scene from a film “The silence of the lambs”:

At first to imitate a chosen monologue, we needed to make our character talk like a muppet:

Week 7: The research topics

The main aim of the class this week was to think of possible research topics that can be used for the critical report and the final thesis.

To make a process of finding a right topic more beneficial, we were divided into groups in order to share the ideas between each other and get feedback.

Considering my personal interests, I came up with a few topics:

  • Representation of gender-fluidity in animation
  • The lack of female identity in animation
  • The use of shapes for gender identification of the animated characters

Week 6: Paraphrasing

Original paragraph:

The authenticity of a documentary is deeply linked to notions of realism and the idea that documentary images are linked to notions of realism and the idea that documentary images bear evidence of events that actually happened, by virtue of the indexical relationship between image and reality.

Honess Roe, A. (2013) Animated Documentary. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.

Paraphrased paragraph:

Honess Roe (2013, Animated Documentary) believes that the concept of realism as well as the authenticity of the images are significant for the accuracy of a documentary, as they prove that the events actually happened.
